- Introduction To Solar Water Heaters
Solar water heater is a heating device that converts solar energy into heat energy, heating water from low temperature to high temperature to meet people’s hot water needs in daily life and production. Solar water heaters are divided into vacuum tube solar water heaters and flat plate solar water heaters according to their structural forms. Vacuum tube solar water heaters are mainly used, accounting for 95% of the domestic market share. A vacuum tube household solar water heater is composed of related accessories such as a heat collection tube, a water storage tank, and a bracket. The conversion of solar energy into thermal energy mainly relies on the vacuum heat collection tube. The vacuum heat collection tube uses the principle of hot water floating up and cold water sinking down to generate microcirculation in water and obtain the required hot water.

Solar water heaters convert solar energy into heat energy, heating water from low to high temperatures to meet people’s hot water needs in daily life and production. Solar water heaters are divided into vacuum tube solar water heaters and flat plate solar water heaters according to their structural forms. Vacuum tube solar water heaters are the main type, accounting for 95% of the domestic market share. A vacuum tube household solar water heater is composed of related accessories such as a heat collection tube, a water storage tank, and a bracket. The conversion of solar energy into thermal energy mainly relies on the heat collection tube. The heat collection tube utilizes the principle of hot water floating up and cold water sinking down to generate microcirculation in the water and achieve the required hot water.
- Classification Of Solar Water Heaters
3.1 Glass Vacuum Tube Solar Water Heater
The commonly used type is the all glass vacuum tube type, especially the solar water heater with auxiliary electric heating function. Its energy utilization method, which relies mainly on solar energy and supplemented by electrical energy, enables the solar water heater to operate normally all day round the year, and its efficiency is still relatively high when the ambient temperature is low. Safe, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly, but the glass tube is relatively large in size, fragile, prone to scale buildup, and cannot operate under pressure.
3.2 Flat Plate Solar Water Heater
Flat panel solar water heaters can be divided into tube plate type, wing tube type, serpentine tube type, flat box type, round tube type, and heat pipe type. Suitable for southern regions that do not freeze in winter. Good overall performance, long lifespan, few malfunctions, able to operate under pressure, safe and reliable, with a large heat absorbing body area, but poor insulation performance.
3.3 Ceramic Hollow Flat Plate Solar Water Heater
Ceramic solar panels are hollow thin-walled flat box solar collectors with ordinary ceramics as the substrate and three-dimensional mesh vanadium titanium black porcelain as the surface layer. Ceramic solar panels are made entirely of ceramic materials, which are impermeable, waterproof, have high strength, good rigidity, non corrosive, non aging, non fading, non-toxic, harmless, non radioactive, and have a high long-term photothermal conversion efficiency. They are widely used.
Divided by structure: compact solar water heater, split solar water heater
Divided by the pressure of the water tank: pressurized solar water heaters and non pressurized solar water heaters.
- Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Water Heaters
Advantage:
4.1 High tech products, copper aluminum anodized composite board cores or all purple copper board cores, with high surface treatment technology, good heat transfer performance, strong heat absorption ability, and large water production;
4.2 The system has good insulation performance and large heat storage energy. The insulated water tank has a water storage function, which can meet the centralized use of hot water by a large number of personnel and can also be used as an emergency water source in case of water outage;
4.3 The solar water heater system operates automatically and statically, without the need for dedicated supervision, noise, pollution, leakage, fire, poisoning, and other hazards. It is safe and reliable, environmentally friendly, energy-saving, and beneficial to the country and the people;
4.4 Equipped with pollution purification function, the water source is clean and pollution-free;
4.5 Vacuum tube solar water heaters have good insulation performance and strong frost resistance.
Disadvantages:
4.1 Large scale installation has insulation effect on the floor;
4.2 The hot water pipeline is over ten meters long, which wastes a lot of water every time it is used;
4.3 It takes a whole day of sunshine to heat up the water, and when the weather is good, only hot water can be guaranteed at night. There is very little hot water available during the day and night, and it cannot guarantee 24-hour hot water supply for users, resulting in poor comfort;
4.4 The daylighting panel of the solar water heater must be installed on the roof, which is both bulky and affects the aesthetics of the building (more obvious in high-end residential areas), and is also prone to damaging the waterproof layer of the roof;
4.5 Optoelectronic complementarity cannot be properly achieved in practice.
4.6 More than 99% of the current market is very backward “non pressure type”, commonly known as “falling into the water type”. It only has one water pipe for inlet and outlet, which is very inconvenient to use and not comfortable at all.
In the next article, we will discuss how to choose and install a solar water heater, as well as its comparison with other water heaters。
